Greenberg ignored William’s entreaties and withheld William’s request from Madeleine for years. Before initiating a lawsuit, William contacted Madeleine’s mother Dierdre Westgate to appeal to her to convince Madeleine to take back the false allegations. Ms. Westgate told William that the “situation was in the hands of lawyers” and sent all of William’s correspondence to Greenberg, who asked Ms. Westgate if she wanted to press harassment charges against William. It is not known whether Ms. Westgate ever told Madeleine that a lawsuit was imminent.
